After another long cycle of rumours, speculation and leaks Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has finally been announced! Having covered Ancient Greece in the previous instalment we now see the popular stab simulator aim its blade towards the days of the Viking in all their pillaging glory. Revealed with a typically gorgeous CG trailer this title has been announced for (deep breath) the PS4, Xbox One, PC, Stadia and perhaps most excitingly for the upcoming PS5 and Xbox Series X.

The days of stealthily murdering key targets seems to be long gone with the trailer focusing on massive Viking brawls, sure to attract fans of the popular TV series Vikings. Until the hidden blade reveal this could have been a new For Honor trailer, Ubisoft’s other Viking based venture.

However, for fans of the more arcane, mythic side of bearded barbarism a mid-trailer reveal of Odin implies Norse mythology will be integrated into the confusing long-running First Civilisation storyline. Hot on the trail of the God of War reboot and the success of Marvel’s Thor films it seems there will be something for Viking fans of all ages. (Well as long as they’re 18 or over).

In a post-trailer interview, Ubisoft confirmed the return of male and female protagonist options, romance and a village hub. Creative director Ashraf Ismail headed previous stand-out entries such as Black Flag and Origins. A promise to double-down on the RPG elements introduced in the last two instalments bodes well for fans of customisation and long-term progression.

Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla is set to release this Holiday season.
